The Mushroom?

Sitting in class, I reflected back to my childhood and the excitement playing Super Mario Brothers brought to my heart. But looking at it from being a twenty years old versus an eight year old, made me think of the myths in game playing, such as the mushroom. Mushrooms are sometimes seen as deadly instead of something that makes you grow and gain strength or even give you another life. So what made them chose the mushroom?
