Expression: Design :: Tell: Story (OPUS 1)

Artifacts are objects they shape the world around us. They are an exhibit of where we as humans have came from and show trend patterns that are likely to reoccur. They are also culturally significant in the fact that, artifacts are a key in linking the present to the past. As Interior Architects, we have to realize that the design that we produce will one day be the gateway of future designs. Example: 5 Favorite Things (Illuminated Objects) were the objects that have helped shape my life.

Stories are the drama contained in or around an object. Everything in design tells a story whether it’s as simple as a room or an entire building. A building or room’s usage whether it is personal or public, states a story. It continues on and paves the way for the design for the rest of the space indoor and outdoor. Example: These objects drawn are pulled from Little Red Cap because they were significant as to how the story unfolded.

Translation is a change or transference. In design, changes will occur within a structure according to its usage, time period, and the objects that inhabit it. Mostly used in language, translation can also be the bridging gap between different cultures, providing us with new and innovative design solutions that make life easier. "This building (The Lincoln Cathedral) was constructed as a public demonstration of both church power and civic pride (p. 6 Roth, Understanding Architecture)."

Multi-view is when an object that can be seen in different ways when determining its purpose of utilization. When looking at structures such as a bicycle shed, some people see the structure as nothing more than a shed but to others they realize the architectural qualities that it contains. Example on p. 5 of Understanding Architecture, Lane Transit District bicycle shed, "The bicycle shed is part of a citywide network of shelters designed to encourage the use of the bus transportation (p. 5 Roth)."

Cycle is a reoccurring sequence of events. The term cycle fits the expression that everything that is old will be new again. Trends in home furnishings and appliances are beginning to repeat themselves, such as colored appliances, retro furniture, and even some of the latest fashion trends. Trends may change but most of the ones that go out of style have a possibility of cycling back through and appealing to society at least once more.

Synopsis
These terms grouped together form what makes unavoidable art. These terms assure that designers carry the past with them mentally as they builds towards the future. In building towards the future, it teaches us as designers that we need to practice through demonstrations and theorize through ideas.
